On the Discussion Regarding the Possible Closure of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
The Movement for Reforms and Development of Tajikistan expresses deep concern regarding Elon Musk’s statement about the potential closure of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). At a time when independent journalism in Tajikistan is under unprecedented pressure, this media outlet remains the only source of objective and balanced information for millions of citizens.
RFE/RL is the sole independent news agency operating in Tajikistan, playing a critical role in ensuring access to independent news in a country where press freedom is severely restricted and alternative viewpoints are systematically suppressed. Its closure would create an informational vacuum that would inevitably be filled by propaganda-driven media outlets serving the interests of authoritarian states. Given the increasing informational influence of Russia and China, RFE/RL serves as a crucial counterbalance against disinformation, upholding the principles of transparency and objectivity.
The United States of America has traditionally stood as a staunch defender of freedom of speech and human rights. Shutting down RFE/RL would undermine the U.S. position in the region, leaving Central Asia’s media landscape at the mercy of authoritarian regimes. Moreover, in recent years, hundreds of journalists in Tajikistan have been persecuted, with dozens imprisoned. RFE/RL remains one of the most vital platforms for covering issues related to freedom of speech and human rights violations.
We urge the U.S. Department of State and the international community to continue supporting Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and other independent media outlets, which play a key role in safeguarding freedom of information and democratic values in Central Asia. Freedom of speech is the foundation of stability and prosperity, and its protection aligns with both the interests of the region and global democratic principles.
