On February 23, 2025, the Chairman of the Movement for Reform and Development of Tajikistan, Sharofiddin Gadoev, extended his official congratulations to Friedrich Merz, Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), on his and the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc’s decisive victory in the 2025 parliamentary elections in the Federal Republic of Germany.
In his message, Gadoev emphasized that this victory comes at a challenging and pivotal moment when democracy worldwide is facing serious threats, and European security is increasingly endangered by authoritarian regimes, particularly Russia. He underscored that authoritarianism is gaining momentum globally, while democratic principles are being eroded and coming under severe pressure. Hundreds of thousands of people across the world, including in Tajikistan, fall victim to repressive regimes.
Gadoev drew attention to the dire situation in Tajikistan, where the authoritarian regime of Emomali Rahmon brutally suppresses dissent. Independent journalists, human rights defenders, and opposition activists face arbitrary arrests, torture, and politically motivated persecution. Dozens of journalists and thousands of political prisoners remain incarcerated under fabricated charges. Repressive tactics, including enforced disappearances, mass executions, and the persecution of opposition members’ families, have become institutionalized as tools of state policy.
Gadoev emphasized that Germany has historically been one of the key guarantors of democratic values, the rule of law, and international stability. Given this, he expressed hope that under Friedrich Merz’s leadership, Germany will continue to defend democracy and human rights, particularly in regions where these fundamental principles are under serious threat.
Sharofiddin Gadoev also expressed his hope that Germany will provide diplomatic, political, and moral support to the democratic forces of Tajikistan in their struggle for freedom, the rule of law, and the country’s democratic future. He stressed that such support would make a significant contribution to strengthening regional security, protecting the rights and freedoms of Tajikistani citizens, and reinforcing the international legal order.
In conclusion, Gadoev wished Friedrich Merz success in his responsible leadership role and extended his best wishes for peace, prosperity, and well-being to the people of the Federal Republic of Germany.
